Why CrossFit Longmont Builds Mechanics Before Intensity ... Always

Mechanics → Consistency → Intensity isn't just a phrase we casually throw around in here. It's a robust methodology that has been going strong for 25yrs, and the research on injury and skill acquisition backs up why the order matters.


The Research Basis


Beginners carry the highest injury risk — and it's concentrated in specific joints. A study tracking CrossFit athletes over 12 months found beginners had markedly higher rates of knee and shoulder injury than more experienced athletes, with the research pointing toward a need for mandatory foundational training and ongoing technique coaching instead of a focus on how intensely someone is working in a given workout. This is why we offer a foundations package of one on one sessions to teach you how to move best for your body and current fitness level. 


Coaching involvement is directly tied to injury rate. One of the first formal studies on CrossFit injuries found that as coach involvement increased, injury rates decreased. The presence of a qualified coach vs training on your own was one of the clearest protective factors identified. Our coaches are constantly honing their craft to make sure they are delivering the absolute best class experience possible and making sure to watch out for you so you can get into the best shape of your life safely. We also focus on coaching the whole person outside of the gym to ensure that the consistency you have always needed actually materializes. 


Properly coached training carries injury risk comparable to other demanding sports. A review of the available research concluded that injury rates in CrossFit-style training are comparable to or lower than rates in Olympic weightlifting, distance running, gymnastics, and rugby — with the caveat, repeated across multiple studies, that supervision and coaching quality are what keep that rate down. And just to be clear, that risk is very low-3.2 injuries per 1,000 hours of training. This rate is significantly lower than basketball, football and soccer which can be up to 24.7 injuries per 100 hours for basketball specifically. And with proper strength training and load management even those injury rates decrease across the same time period in those contact sports. All of which help to strengthen the case for high quality coaching and strength training to be a pillar of your athletic performance training pyramid. Done well, with movement quality held to a consistent standard we can help significantly REDUCE your chances of getting injured doing the things you love outside of the gym.


Skill acquisition itself requires a progressive structure. Research on motor learning has found that acquiring a new movement skill depends on progressive challenge — introducing complexity and load in a sequence the nervous system can actually absorb, rather than all at once. Rushing that sequence doesn't just raise injury risk; it slows down how well the skill is ultimately learned. Mechanics for the win again! Wins in improvement of your mechanics stack across complex skills and allow you to build efficiency in that movement and increase your work capacity. 


Why This Shapes How CFL Is Built


None of this is a case for training cautiously forever. It's a case for sequencing correctly — building movement competency first, layering in consistency once mechanics hold up, and only then pushing intensity, when, where and if your body allows. That's the literal order of Mechanics → Consistency → Intensity, and it's why every CFL coach is trained to evaluate where someone is in that sequence before deciding how hard to push them, rather than defaulting to a hard workout because that's what the group is doing that day. Add in our focus on mastering the other pillars of your health and you have a recipe for lasting health and fitness improvements that will see you into your 70s, 80s and beyond.


Coaching doesn't stop after the first few weeks at CFL. The research is consistent: ongoing coach involvement, not just an onboarding period, is what keeps injury rates low as people advance, and having a friendly knowledgeable face waiting for you every class helps keep you coming back for more.
